Dedicated hosting, unlike shared hosting where many sites are hosted from one server, allows the client to lease or rent a complete server unit. This server is dedicated to one clients hosting needs. Having the complete resources of an entire server is important to high traffic websites, sites with complex programming and applications, sites requiring a high percentage uptime, and clients who desire complete server control. In a dedicated hosting setup, the parent hosting company will take physical care of the server maintenance, but the client is usually responsible for the software installation and setup.
Advantages of dedicated hosting include the level of control, reliability, and high performance. Dedicated packages are also custom tailored to the clients needs as far as memory and processing power.
Disadvantages of having such great power and reliability are the cost in both dollars as well as time. Leasing an entire server will always cost markedly more then sharing a server with other clients, and to be in total control of the server will require administrative monitoring and security. Also with software malfunctions technical assistance will either be unavailable or come with an additional hourly fee.
